Reuters:

Hundreds of youngsters gatecrashed a private 18th birthday party in Devon after hearing about it on the radio and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, the owner’s wife was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Rebecca Brooks told reporters up to 2,000 uninvited teenagers turned up at the Grade II-listed property in Bovey Tracey after some details were given during a “shout out” on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 programme. The “shout outs” are given every week…

Ironic that also, given the episode aired last nightIan’s anger gets the better of him after Lucy’s party ends in carnage. — of BBC “Eastenders”.

The BBC offers this defense:

…The item said: “We’re getting ready for a huge mansion party - 500 plus people going - it’s in Bovey.

“Tracey in Devon tipping us off on that, anyone who’s listening can come along, apparently, just say ‘hi’ to Marilyn Monroe on the door.”

A BBC spokesman said:Pete did not specify the name or address of the venue, but read out details of a mansion party taking place in Bovey Tracey sent in by a listener…

Yeh, and good luck with that excuse in court. For just how many other mansion parties does the BBC think were due to take place in Bovey Tracey? Like any potential crashers needed to be given an exact address on air, in order to locate it? It ain’t exactly Bournemouth.

The sad part is, though, that in the end it isn’t really the Beeb responsible for paying for the damage: it’s every British TV licence-fee paying household, of course.
